Kolkata is a city in India that’s known for its chai. The founders of Kolkata Chai Co. (KCC) wanted to bring that chai culture and heritage to the streets of New York while remaining authentic and respectful. My vision was to bring that to life in a striking way that felt nostalgic yet modern at the same time.
‘Chai tea’ is a common phrase seen on menus, but chai actually means tea, making this a completely redundant statement. I designed a mural inside the cafe that serves as an educational tool and also doubles as a fun photo-op.
KCC has been featured on NBC, Food & Wine, GMA, Thrillist, Eater, and more. This project case study has also been published in Victionary New Retro 20th Anniversary Edition.
In 2020, Kolkata Chai Co. collaborated with Mikey Likes It, a black owned NYC ice cream shop. To support these BIPOC restaurants and show off their new ice cream flavors, I created a summer campaign with the concept of ‘Embracing Sticky Situations’ that felt appropriate for that particular summer.
